JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Forty-eight hours after two brothers were killed at a Westside restaurant, police announced the arrest of 19-year-old Avery Wood on two counts of felony murder and two counts of robbery.
Wood is accused of the shooting deaths of 19-year-old Matthew Bohannon and 24-year-old Andrew Bohannon in the parking lot of a Golden Corral Sunday night.
Investigators said Wood admitted he planned to rob the brothers for their drugs, and recruited others to help carry out the crime.
Bohannon's parents admitted that their sons once used marijuana, but they told Channel 4 that their kids weren't involved with dealing drugs.
"It's just not true, it wasn't about drugs," said Stephanie Bohannon. "They went prepared with guns, it wasn't about drugs."
Stephanie Bohannon said the suspect of her son's murders is lying to police.
"If you're going to rob somebody, why would you kill them? Why would you just point blank kill them? It doesn't make any sense," said Bohannon.
Channel 4's cameras were rolling when Wood was taken into custody by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Investigators have not revealed if Wood was the gunman, but they do say he admitted to planning to rob the Bohannon brothers.
"It's putting an ugly spin on this story. If you knew my two sons the way that we know them, and all of our friends, they are just the greatest kids in the world," said the victims' father Bruce Bohannon.
Bohannon praised JSO for their quick work Tuesday night, and told Channel 4 now he's focused on justice for his two oldest boys.
"I would ask that they seek the death penalty. I'm sorry, there is just no exception to something like this," said Bohannon.
The family said they are still gathering strength and solace in the arms of their other five children, but want to make sure no other family or parent has to endure the same pain they have.
"I was glad they caught them, but it doesn't bring my boys back. I hope they keep them there so no other parent has to bury their babies," said Stephanie.
Police anticipate more arrests will be made in the case in the coming days. JSO has also planned a news conference for Wednesday to release more details. Avery Wood is expected to make his first appearance in court Wednesday morning.
