Fans urged to arrive early for UGA-UF game

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With more than 83,000 people expected to show up to EverBank Field for the Georgia-Florida game Saturday, officials are making one thing clear: Get there early.

Officials said fans should arrive at least five hours before the 3:30 p.m. kickoff. Gates will open at 1:30 p.m.

Fans who don't have designated parking are urged to use the Jacksonville Transportation Authority shuttles or Skyway, or a water taxi to get to and from the game.

Security will be heightened, with undercover and uniform officers patrolling the area to make sure no one gets out of hand. They will also be issuing citations to those drinking underage.

The weekend includes events and activities such as the 20th Annual Merrill Lynch/Bank of America Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame Luncheon, presented by Ruth's Chris Steak House; RV City, presented by Winn-Dixie; the AutoZone Florida-Georgia Tailgate Party; presented by Cheney Brothers; the TAILGATE concert, featuring The Band Perry; and Touchdown Showdown, an interactive game day fan experience.

In addition, the City of Jacksonville will host six Sideline Safety Zones in the Sports Complex and throughout downtown Jacksonville. The Sideline Safety Zones, presented by William Scotsman, will provide free assistance ranging from first aid, transportation, directions, telephone service, food, water, and more. Mayor Lenny Curry hailed the game as an event that brings the community together like nothing else can.

"Florida-Georgia brings our community together unlike anything else," said Mayor Lenny Curry. "This weekend's festivities are built upon the energy of two prestigious institutions, their loyal fans, and some of the most talented student-athletes and coaches ever to take the field."

Officials urge fans to download the Audible Traffic Jacksonville app to help navigate their way to and from the game.

Road closures begin downtown Thursday. Near The Jacksonville Landing, Hogan Street from Water Street to the river will be closed from 8 a.m. Thursday-11 p.m. Sunday. Pearl Street from Water Street to the river will also be closed during that time frame, along with Coastline Drive from The Landing to Newnan Street.
