Man accidentally runs over daughter in Hawthorne

7-year-old girl in stable condition

HAWTHORNE, Fla. – A 7-year-old girl was taken to the hospital Thursday night after she was run over by a vehicle her dad was driving outside their home near Ochwilla Elementary School and State Road 20.

That girls' father said he thought his kids were in his truck when he put his truck in drive, but that's when he heard a thump.

"She was crying. She was alert. She was breathing hard and just holding her stomach with both of her hands," said Ruth Bryant. "She was moaning a little bit like, 'Uh, uh, my stomach hurts, my stomach hurts.' And I was like, 'Calm down, breathe slow, breathe real slow, and take your time."

Bryant, who works at a nearby Kangaroo gas station, said the father came to the gas station screaming for someone to help his daughter.

"I asked her how old she was, what the day was and what's her name and she told me all of that. Her heart rate was up a little bit and she was really scared. So the ambulance finally came and so they checked the little girl out."

The girl was taken to UF Health Gainesville in stable condition.

Two other boys, ages 5 and 9, were in the truck at the time of the accident.

No other details were immediately released.
