FDOT announces Baymeadows Road intersection improvement project

Officials say project will begin in January

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation is planning a project to improve intersections along Baymeadows Road that is to start in January.

The goal is to make the road safer for drivers, but since it will take about a year to complete, construction could cause some congestion and confusion.

FDOT officials started noticing the number of accidents happening on the road, especially where cars would try to make left-hand turns, and decided to implement a change.

The project layout spans from just west of Interstate 95 all the way to Southside Boulevard.

FDOT officials said they plan to widen some turn lanes and adding a second turn lane at some of the traffic lights.

Modifications will be made to the medians and take away left-hand turns that are currently in areas where officials have seen the most significant problems.

FDOT officials said they also plan to put a sidewalk on the eastbound side of Baymeadows Road, since there is not one currently. It will go all the way down to Southside Boulevard for the safety of pedestrians.

A left-hand turn will be added at the intersection of Baymeadows Road and Old Baymeadows Road, along with some traffic light improvements.

FDOT's project plan map shows major changes will be made at the intersection of Baymeadows Road and Southside Boulevard.

"That corridor is always busy anyway to those a custom driving through Baymeadows in that section are accustomed to a good bit of traffic in there," FDOT spokesperson Ron Tittle said. "Hopefully this will alleviate some of that once we get it completed however when we go through the process of construction you need to be aware there may be some short delays in there."

FDOT officials said the project is expected to be finished in December 2017, but commuters should be aware of the changes and use caution during construction.

More information of the project can be found on the FDOT website.
