FedEx breaks ground on new facility

FedEx Ground's new 300,000-square-foot facility expected to open July 2015

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – FedEx Corporation broke ground Thursday on a new distribution facility in Jacksonville.

FedEx Ground, the small package ground delivery unit of FedEx Corp., will host a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday as the construction begins on the new facility at the Cecil Commerce Center in Jacksonville.

The FedEx Ground facility is expected to open its new 300,000-square-foot facility in July 2015.

The new FedEx Ground facility is part of the company's nationwide network expansion plan that includes 525 distribution hubs and local pickup-and-delivery stations around the country.

FedEx said the company has accelerated service by at least one day to more than 70 percent of the United States since 2003. FedEx Ground said is expected to deliver mail faster to more residential locations than its primary competitor.

The volume of packages FedEx Ground handles every business day has doubled in the last 10 years.

FedEx Ground said it specializes in cost-effective, small-package ground shipping, offering business-to-business delivery and convenient residential services. It employs about 61,000 people.

Its operations are supported by about 9,000 independent businesses that pick up, deliver and transport more than 5.6 million packages daily throughout the U.S. and Canada. The company reported annual revenue of $10.5 billion in fiscal year 2013.

FedEx Ground Vice President of Regional Operations Bob Holcombe joined state and local officials, including Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown, at the groundbreaking.
