FHP: 3 dead, 9 injured after SUV overturns

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. – Three people were killed and 9 others were hurt in a crash Saturday afternoon in Martin County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a family of 12 from Apopka was traveling on the Florida Turnpike when their vehicle sustained a left rear tire tread separation and the driver lost control.

FHP said the SUV left the roadway, overturned and several occupants were ejected from the vehicle.

Uriel Miranda, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, Yaretsi Miranda, 2, was transported to Tradition Medical Center and then transferred to St. Mary's where she was pronounced dead, officials said.

According to an FHP report, Yordi Miranda, 8, initially sustained critical injuries and was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center, but died Sunday afternoon from his injuries.

Seven others remain hospitalized, but are in stable condition, while two others have been treated and released from the hospital.

The turnpike was closed for the investigation and re-opened at 9:10 p.m., FHP said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
