FHP cites Clay Co. sheriff's lieutenant with speed

Wreck involved overturned golf cart being towed by deputy

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – After an investigation into an accident that injured a teenager, the Florida Highway Patrol has cited Clay County Sheriff's Office Lt. Baylor Alexander with driving too fast for conditions.

According to the FHP report prepared at the request of the Green Cove Spring Police Department, Alexander was towing a golf cart with a dead battery with his personal Jeep Wrangler about 8:25 p.m. Saturday in the Magnolia Point subdivision. His son and three other teenagers were riding on the cart when it started weaving in the road, then overturned.

Investigators said Alexander was only going 20-25 mph, but tire marks in the road indicated that one of the teens was braking and steering the golf cart.

After the crash, one of the teens later complained of a headache and dizziness and was taken to a hospital.

The FHP said Alexander admitted to having one drink earlier in the day while he was grilling.

The Sheriff's Office is aware of the incident, but that there would be no internal investigation of the crash.
