SANDERSON, Fla. – A fatal accident on U.S. 90 and Interstate 10 in Baker County has officials taking a closer look at the intersection where the two highways meet.
Last Friday, a Lake City couple was killed and their 3-year-old grandson sent to the hospital after a terrible crash at the intersection of U.S. 90 and I-10.
Richard and Ann Ratliff were driving on U.S. 90 Friday when they crashed into a UPS truck that was crossing the intersection. Channel 4 sat down with Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan Monday night to go over the other accidents that have happened at that intersection.
"The intersection of U.S. 90 and I-10, we've had multiple crashes in recent years, however most appear to be minor in nature. Unfortunately, the one that just occurred was fatal," said Bryan.
Channel 4 went by the Ratliff's Lake City home on Monday, but family members didn't want to speak on camera. The family did tell Channel 4 that the 3-year-old in the car during the crash is now back home from the hospital. The family also said they are waiting to hear the details of the investigation. The investigation will determine whether the rural intersection is safe.
"The geometry of the intersection is unique, as far as distance that driver has to travel when exiting the interstate. It's a little farther than most people realize," said Bryan.
Bryan said the Department of Transportation will look at the findings of the crash and determine if any sort of signs or lights need to be installed to prevent accidents in the future.
"We do work in connection with DOT and State Safety Office or Traffic Operations Office in Jacksonville. If it's determined that an engineering change needs to be changed they will start that process," said Bryan.
