TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida's 'move over' law may be on the books to protect public safety workers, but last week it led to the capture of a West Virginia fugitive.

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper William Craig stopped a driver June 12 on State Road 528 for failure to move over for a Brevard County sheriff's deputy who was on a traffic stop.

According to the FHP, the nervous driver provided a false name, but using Rapid ID, a handheld fingerprint scanner, Craig positively identified the driver as Brett David Bowyer, who was wanted on an out-of-state warrant for child pornography.

The trooper arrested Bowyer and booked him into the Brevard County jail on charges of false information given to law enforcement and having the wrong license plate attached to a vehicle and is pending transfer on the West Virginia charges.

Bowyer, 44, a high school counselor in Priceton, W.V., when he was arrested on child porn charges September. After he failed to appear at his sentencing hearing, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

His story was featured on the television program America's Most Wanted last fall.
