Bicyclist's death on Mayport raises concerns

FHP identifies woman killed in Mayport crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the bicyclist who was hit and killed on Mayport Road Wednesday afternoon as 42-year-old Misty Van Pelt.

People in the area said that road is dangerous and Wednesday's deadly crash should be a wake-up call.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Van Pelt turned into the path of an oncoming car at Mayport Road and Edgar Street and was hit. She was transported to UF Health Jacksonville, but couldn't be saved.

Troopers at the scene told News4Jax the driver who hit the woman stopped and was interviewed.

Residents in the area said that this wasn't the first time someone has been hit in the area, there have been two other cases of pedestrians being hit along Mayport Road in the last year, and they want something done.

Wednesday, a woman riding her bike left flowers for Van Pelt at the accident site. It was her way of hopefully bringing awareness to what she said is a big problem.

"I pray that she rests in peace. And I pray that everyone drives a little more safely down Mayport Road," bicyclist Loretta Parsons said.

Good Samaritans stood close around Van Pelt doing whatever they could to help as they waited for paramedics to arrive. Tragically, she died a short time later.

"One of my employees came in the shop and said that someone had just gotten hit in the middle of the road, again," Debra Gordon, who works where the accident happened, said.

Gordon works at Dirtbag Choppers, just yards away from where Van Pelt was hit. She told me a man she knows was hit as he rode his bicycle in the same spot last April. Gordon said one of the biggest problems is speed.

"Also, there's not a crosswalk here so bicyclists tend to just go out into the oncoming traffic and kind of dodge their way around it," Gordon said.

But even stretches of Mayport Road with crosswalks are dangerous. News4Jax has documented at least two separate instances where pedestrians were hit.

In May of 2014, a 57-year-old man was walking through a crosswalk when he was hit. In December, a man was hit and badly injured as he was on a crosswalk at Mayport Road at Plaza Road, less than half a mile away from where Van Pelt was hit.

Parsons said that after hearing the news, several of her coworkers feared she was the one who'd been hit. Her hope now is to raise awareness.

"I'm hoping that her death is not in vain," Parsons said.

People in the area said they've reached out to the city of Atlantic Beach in hopes of getting some help with the road. They said they were referred to the Department of Transportation who said they are planning to look at the intersection to see if any improvements can be made.
