FHP: Woman drives off I-95, dies in crash

Cause of crash still under investigation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman died Saturday when her Crown Victoria went over the retaining wall of Interstate 95 approaching downtown and landed in a construction zone below, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said Dion Greene, 37, was killed in the crash.

According to investigators, Greene was driving north on Interstate 95 just before 6 p.m. approaching the exit onto the Acosta Bridge. Witnesses said the car veered to the right and over-corrected back to the left before it went up and over the wall.

The car struck some construction debris, rolled and landed upright.

Three military veterans who were in front of Greene's car saw the car go over the wall.

"I look over and see about half the vehicle go over the guard railing," David Swanson, a witness, said. "I immediately pulled out my phone and called 911."

The men got off the interstate to try to help, but it was too late.

“We were prying doors open, they were bent to the point where we had to literally pry and just pulled her out, started administrating chest compressions as best as I could until medical arrived," Swanson said.

“I would like to say to the three gentlemen that attempted to help, the Greene family wants to thank you very much,” Dion’s brother Ron Greene said.

Family and friends, like Robert Bradwell, are in pain over Greene’s sudden death. Greene was a mother to two boys, and someone Bradwell says was a helper. He said Greene worked with disabled people and had just finished.

“They just left the bowling alley and dropped her off home,” Bradwell said. “Dion left from work at like 5:30 and then this happened.”

Greene was the only person in the car and died at the scene of the crash. Two northbound lanes were closed for several hours while troopers investigated and cleared the crash and highway workers made temporary repairs to the barrier wall.

Ron Greene said Dion’s spirit is keeping him strong.

“Memories, Ron Greene said. “That’s all I have going right now.”

Greene's family has setup a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.
