Fighting destructive termites in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville task force is placing 100 traps in the Riverside area this week to help capture Formosan termites that have become a problem around the city.

Termites were so bad at the historic Woman's Club of Jacksonville that the building had to be demolished last year.

Now, the city of Jacksonville's termite task force group plans to set traps at each of the city's 53 fire stations, which are old buildings and could be a target for the pests.

Pest control experts say traps need to be put in place to protect people's homes and so the area doesn't lose any more historic buildings.

Those task force groups said the traps will likely be mounted to JEA street light poles as well.

Formosan Termites swarm in May and June. Experts say homeowners should make sure there's no wood touching the ground around their homes and have bait traps installed to cut back on termite populations.

That goes for all of Jacksonville, but if you live in Riverside, it would be a smart idea to invest in termite protection for your home since the problem is so prevalent there.
