The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of a fire to a consignment shop on the Southside Tuesday morning.

Around 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, firefighters with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue were dispatched to The Clothing Store on University Boulevard South near Beach Boulevard.

"We first got called out this morning because a truck driver noticed smoke smell in the area so I arrived on a routine investigative assignment and when we did arrive there was smoke showing," said Fire District Chief Mike Strickland.

The Clothing Store is located along University Boulevard South in the Kmart Plaza next to Jackson Hewitt Tax Service on the Southside.

"Crews made forced entry into the business and did find a fire in the rear of the structure and the fire was put out relatively quickly," said Strickland.

Strickland said he does not consider this incident a 'suspicious' fire, but it waiting on the Fire Marshal to confirm the cause of the fire. Strickland said it may be electrical.

No one was in the store at the time of the fire and no firefighters were injured.

"Not a whole lot of fire damage, there is going to be a significant smoke damage to business which is a clothing, consignment shop so there is going to be a lot of damage to the merchandise," said Strickland. "The fire could have been worse but in the rear of the structure there's a water pipe running in the building and the fire burnt through the water pipe so there was actually water spraying on the fire which helped control the fire."

The State Fire Marshal has been called to investigate and confirm the cause of the morning fire.
