Fire union declines to endorse candidate for mayor

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville's fire union will not be endorsing a candidate in the mayor's race.

Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown's name was the only one on an endorsement ballot for the Jacksonville Association of Firefighters. The vote was whether to endorse Brown or not.

News4Jax learned Thursday that Brown got a majority of Yes votes, but he needed a two-thirds majority to secure the endorsement.

The union did not say what the exact tally was, but a two-thirds vote was not achieved. The union has more than 1,200 members.

"Mayor Brown was very proud to earn the support of the majority of firefighters present today," said Fabien Levy, Brown's deputy campaign manager. "He's worked hard to have the support of Jacksonville's firefighters, as well as the entire first responder community."
