FIU frat suspended after student dies at off-campus party

Phi Gamma Delta chapter suspended after Kellie Fullilove found dead at hotel

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A nursing student at Florida International University died while attending an off-campus party.

Kellie Fullilove, 19, was found dead Sunday afternoon at the Bahia Mar hotel in Fort Lauderdale.

FIU Student Media's website said Fullilove was at the hotel to attend a party hosted by the Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) fraternity.

According to the student website, a spokesman for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department said there is no indication of foul play and that Fullilove likely died from a drug overdose.

In a statement, the school offered support for its students affected by Fullilove's death.

"We are saddened by the death of a student this past weekend," the school said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends."

The local chapter of FIJI has been suspended by both the fraternity's national headquarters and FIU pending an investigation.

FIUSM.com says that Fullilove was studying nursing at the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences after earning a degree from Florida Gulf Coast University.

A memorial for Fullilove is being held on Saturday in Cape Coral.
