1 dead in crash involving Disney bus near Epcot

Epcot Center Drive shut down as investigation continues

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – A 63-year-old woman has died in a crash involving a Disney's Magical Express bus and another vehicle near Epcot on Friday afternoon, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said the car was in the process of slowing down in the left lane when it was struck from the back by the Disney's Magical Express bus. The victim, who was from Miami, was alone in car. The crash occurred at Epcot Center Drive and Overpass Road in Orlando just after 3:30 p.m.

At least two people from the bus were taken to Celebration Hospital. One of the victims was a teenager who may have suffered some whiplash and a baby who was brought to the hospital as a precaution.

Video from Local 6 news helicopter Sky 6 showed authorities investigating the scene with the Disney's Magical Express bus with no visible damage and the back of another vehicle crushed.

One woman on the bus said the bus had just picked up passengers from Orlando International Airport and was bringing them to Walt Disney World hotels to begin their vacation. The woman said her son is traumatized after the accident because they were forced to stay on the bus for two hours as FHP investigated the crash.

Epcot Center Drive was shut down in the area for hours during the investigation.

Disney's Magical Express is operated by Mears Transportation. The driver is being interviewed by FHP.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the individual who tragically lost their life in this accident," said Roger Chapin, a spokesman for Mears Transportation Group. "We are cooperating fully with FHP."

No other information on the crash was immediately available.
