PANAMA CITY, Fla. - A suspect in the fatal shooting of two people at the Courtyard Marriott in Panama City was killed during a shootout with law enforcement several hours later on Interstate 10 near Tallahassee.
The initial shooting took place about 10:45 p.m. Sunday outside the hotel in Panama City. The suspect was pulled over about 2 a.m. Monday.
The victims - a 44-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man - were shot multiple times in what appeared to be a targeted shooting, according to Panama City police. The man died at the scene and the woman died a short time later at the hospital.
The News Herald of Panama City reports witnesses called police after hearing shots ring out. Officers reported that the suspect fled on foot and then got into a newer model maroon Dodge Charger.
Authorities spotted the vehicle on Interstate 10 and, during a traffic stop, police said, the suspect began shooting at law enforcement officers, including the Florida Highway Patrol.
"Shots rang out coming from the suspect's vehicle with deputies and FHP returning fire," said Lt. James McQuaig, public information officer for the Leon County Sheriff's Office.
The United States Marshals Florida Regional Task Force is participating in the investigation.
Panama City police officers are continuing to gather evidence at the hotel. They say information from evidence gathered at the scene helped them put out a "be-on-the-lookout" for the suspect.
Authorities have not released the names of the suspect or the victims.
