Owner of domestic hog sought, Alachua County deputies say

Deputies contain hog running free

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – The owner of a domestic hog found running free is being sought by the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to a report Sunday about a domestic hog that was running at large. The Sheriff's Office said deputies confirmed the 600-pound Hampshire hog was domestic and not a feral hog.

Deputies were able to contain the hog with a rope. The Sheriff's Office said attempts to find a hog owner in the area were not successful, which prompted a request for an ACSO rural service response.

The hog was loaded without incident and taken to the ACSO livestock impound. Deputies said the hog was very hot from the morning's events, but appeared to be in good health.

The Sheriff's Office said the owner, if identified at a later date, may claim the hog and pick him up after paying all impound fees as follows: $50 impound fee + $5 disposition + $32.40 mileage (60 miles @ .54 cents per mile) + $5 per day impounded.

The hog will be offered for sale at public adoption or auction to the highest bidder at a later date, deputies said.

The owner may call the Sheriff's Office at 352-955-1818 to make arrangements to claim the hog and prevent public auction.
