Driver of van hospitalized after crash

A man riding a bike killed in crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says a man on a bike was killed Sunday afternoon in a crash with a van on Townsend Boulevard and Merrill Road.

Officers say 36-year-old John Dougherty was riding along Townsend Boulevard when the driver of a van, 29-year-old Lee Bond, hit him, pinning the cyclist between the vehicle and a wall.

The crash caused the van to flip over. Bond was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening conditions. Dougherty died at the scene.

Dougherty's family said he was headed home from work and was going to spend Father's Day with his dad at the beach but never made it home.

Officers say the driver of the van was speeding, but do not believe alcohol was a factor.

Collin Johnson lives in the neighborhood where the crash happened and said he wasn't surprised when he heard speed was involved.

"They tend to speed through," Johnson said. "I don't know why. I guess they are always in a rush on this road. But they need to make this road a lot safer. Because children do play out here."
