HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Hallandale Beach police say they have arrested the father of a 1-year-old boy who was last seen in July 2011 when he was just 5 months old.
Calvin Melvin Jr., the boy's father, was arrested Friday. He voluntarily showed up at the Police Department Thursday night for questioning, police said.
His 1-year-old son, Dontrell Melvin, was discovered missing when the Broward Sheriff's Office was investigating an unrelated child neglect case on Wednesday.
Police said Melvin told several stories about what he did with the boy, first saying he dropped him off at a fire station in Miami Gardens, then saying he took him to his grandparents in Pompano Beach so he could have a better life, police said.
The boy's mother waited more than a year to report him missing.
The Miami Herald reports child protective services also failed to act after a call was received at their abuse hotline last fall.
Police didn't immediately announce what charges Melvin faces.
