Proposed phosphate mine protested in Bradford County

Group concerned operation will lower home values, diminish quality of life

BRADFORD COUNTY, Fla. – About a dozen people protested a proposed phosphate mine in Bradford County Friday.

A protest is just one of the many ways a grassroots group said it's working to stop a proposed phosphate mine from being approved in both Union and Bradford counties.

The group is concerned that beginning a mining operation will lower home values and diminish the quality of life for people who live around the mine. It also worries about potential carcinogens used in the mining process.

A private company has proposed mining 7,400 acres of land it already owns. An exact map of the land has not been released yet.

Phosphate is mined primarily for its use in fertilizer.
