Victim speaks out after smash-and-grab theft

Detectives search for woman suspected of check forging

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – Lindsay Vandiver's still shaken after a woman smashed into the back window of her car and stole her purse.

"My whole life's I think in that purse, and it happened at my daughter's daycare which makes it that much worse, I worry about being mugged at the day care now, it's definitely scary," said Vandiver.

Vandiver told Channel 4 that she was inside the day care for just three minutes to drop off her daughter and in that time, a robber was able to commit the crime.

"Before I had gotten out of the car, I did notice a black car circling but I just thought it was another parents about to drop a kid off so I didn't think about it at all," said Vandiver.

Detectives say, Vandiver's purse was stolen by the same person who tried to cash a bogus check.

Investigators said on Nov. 26, the woman walked into a Bank of America on Blanding Boulevard and attempted to cash a check worth $3,300.

The manager of the bank told deputies the woman presented a teller with a check made out to the same name printed on both the driver's license and debit card she provided along with it.

Deputies said both cards were reported stolen that morning. Vandiver canceled her credit cards and thought she was safe, but six hours later she got a call from her bank, that a woman had filed out a blank check and was trying to cash it.

"It definitely surprising I thought maybe she'd try to use the debit or credit cards but I never thought she'd go and try to impersonate me, so that was kinda shocking," said Vandiver.

The bank manager told deputies when he began asking the woman questions to verify her identity, she ran out of the bank and fled the scene in a black Dodge Avenger.

"This is probably not her first time, so she might be out there doing it right now," said Vandiver.

If you have any information on the woman's identity or whereabouts, call the Clay County Sheriff's Office at 904-264-6512.
