According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, a deputy on routine patrol spotted a 1998 Ford pickup speeding northbound on U.S. 1 in Oak Hill.  The deputy tried to catch up to the truck, which was going 110 mph in a 55 mph zone, the Sheriff's Office said.

The truck traveled for another mile, crossing the center line several times, before the driver pulled over, deputies said.  Stoker got out of the truck and immediately informed the deputy that a passenger had been shot in the left hand, officials said.

As the deputy called for a paramedic, she said she noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Stoker's breath.  The deputy also noted that Stoker's speech was slurred and his eyes were red, glassy and watery, the Sheriff's Office said.

After failing field sobriety exercises, Stoker was arrested on charges of driving under the influence.

The shooting victim was a 19-year-old who was struck in his hand, said deputies, adding that he, Stoker and a third passenger were initially uncooperative in the investigation, claiming they had no idea how the victim had been injured.

Deputies said they found three long-barrel firearms in the rear seat of the truck and several spent shotgun shells on the floor of the vehicle. They also said there were open bottles of rum and whiskey in the truck and a 12-pack of beer in a cooler in the bed of the truck along with several empty beer cans.

The shooting victim was treated at the scene and then taken to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach for further treatment.

The Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate to determine how the victim was injured, who fired the shotgun and whether additional criminal charges will be filed.
