Driver on I-75 shot by off-duty police officer

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened on the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near Miami Gardens Drive late Sunday night.

Police say an off-duty officer on his way home observed two cars speeding. The officer conducted a traffic stop on one of the two vehicles.

Police say the officer then got out of his car and motioned for the second vehicle to pull over. The 23-year-old man pulled into the emergency lane and slowed down as he approached the officer's vehicle. The suspect then drove toward the officer, forcing him to shoot.

Police say that he was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he is undergoing surgery.

The driver who was initially pulled over by the officer remained at the scene and was questioned by detectives.

The officer was not injured during the incident. He is a 26-year veteran assigned to the Airport District.
