2 adults, 4 students hurt after school bus hits car

Police say car turned in front of bus carrying students to Mandarin High School

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Six people, including four students, were hospitalized Thursday morning after a school bus ran into a car on Powers Avenue.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue told Channel 4 two adults and four students were transported to area hospitals, but none of the injuries were life-threatening. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the driver of the car was among the most seriously injured.

JFRD says several other students were treated for cuts and bruises at the scene of the crash.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Powers Avenue and Old Kings Road, not far from Wolfson High School.

Police say the car turned in front of the bus and the bus hit it. The driver had to be cut from the car.

"For some unknown reason, the driver of the vehicle headed north, made a left-hand turn in front of the school bus, and the front of the school bus struck the front of the vehicle, causing major damage," JSO Sgt. Rick Hike said.

Channel 4's Melanie Lawson reported the Students of America bus was carrying students to Mandarin High School. A backup bus arrived to take the non-injured students to school.

Both southbound lanes of Powers Avenue were closed after the crash. One lane reopened within the hour and the scene was cleared before 9 a.m.
