Jacksonville father, son killed in Friday morning crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville father and his teenage son were killed Friday in a crash with a semi-tractor trailer on Florida's turnpike in Osceola County.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said 44-year-old Martin Reed of Jacksonville was killed after slamming into the back of the semi in the southbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike about 8:15 a.m., a mile north of Yeehaw Junction.

Troopers said the semi, driven by Timothy Cardenas, 48, of Kissimmee, was slowing down to exit off the Turnpike when the crash occurred.

The impact was so intense that the two large vehicles became interlocked and tomato paste cans from the semi spilled all over the road.

Reed's 16-year-old son Brendan Reed was trapped inside the crushed cab. Troopers had to call in a tow truck to pull the two vehicles apart.

The teen had to be freed from the wreckage and was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where he later died.
