Coast Guard rescues fishing boat stuck in ocean

Alert came from vessel east of Jacksonville Beach

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – A fishing boat's engine failed Thursday in the Atlantic Ocean about 23 miles east of Ponte Vedra Beach, the Coast Guard said.

A helicopter from Savannah and a boat from Mayport were sent to the location of the boat's emergency position indicating radiobeacon (EPIRB), which was 20 nautical miles east of the coast.

The crew on the helicopter was able to drop a radio to the four fishermen on the 22-foot boat and found out they couldn't get the engine to start.

"We began to communicate with them and determine what the nature of their situation was," said Anthony Soto with the U.S. Coast Guard. "We were able to confirm there were only four people on board. No injuries were reported to us. Our helicopter stayed on scene until our boat from Mayport arrived."

A Coast Guard boat arrived to help and determined the boat needed to be towed back to Mayport.

The fishermen were transferred to the Coast Guard vessel, and towing company pulled the boat back to shore.
