JEA cleaning up after SUV hits fire hydrant

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Electric Authority workers are cleaning up an area off of Columbine Drive and Rogero Road in Arlington after a driver hit a fire hydrant and landed in a ditch Sunday.

Crews were able to shut off the water and get control of the situation.

News4Jax is told a driver of a blue Jeep Grand Cherokee ran into the fire hydrant at the corner of the intersection before it went into the ditch. The Jeep became partially submerged and a tow truck was used to pull it out.

Police said no one was hurt in the crash. It’s unclear whether the driver is facing charges, but a resident said the driver was speeding before it landed in the ditch. She said many drivers speed on the street and neighbors have tried to get something done about it.

“I’m just saying for the welfare of the children, it just seems like, you know, they can go 20 or 35 miles an hour, not 50 or 55 because there are kids that are small, you know what I mean? And all it would take is one step into the street and they are going to get hit,” Beth Wolowicz said.

People who live in the area say water pressure is low. JEA doesn't have a timetable on how long it will be working in the neighborhood.
