JULINGTON CREEK, Fla. - After a 24-year-old woman was found shot to death in a garage apartment off Julington Creek Road late Saturday night, police say they found her husband hiding naked under a nearby shed.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says Karina Leigh Jensen was shot in the head and killed with a shotgun around midnight after a witness said she and her husband were playing violent video games.
The family friend told police Jensen's husband, 23-year-old Peter Charles John Jensen, grabbed a shotgun, pointed it at his wife and shot her, then fired a shot into the door of the apartment. Police said he then pointed the gun at the witness, but stopped to reload it, so that person ran and called 911.
Homicide detectives were called to the 3000 block of Julington Creek Road around 1 a.m., along with helicopters, K9 teams and ground units from both the Jacksonville and the St. Johns County sheriff's offices, which searched wooded areas and the river much of the night.
Jensen was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center to be treated for drug use, then booked into the Duval County jail.
Police say the shotgun used in the fatal shooting was found inside the apartment.
"We had no past violence between them ... nothing that could lead us to what made him do this, other than, maybe, being under the influence of a narcotic he was under," JSO Lt. Rob Scoonover said.
While police still don't have a clear motive, they believe the drugs and violent video games had something to do with this killing, something Channel 4 crime analyst Ken Jefferson said can be a dangerous combination.
"Now these video games can be an influence on people," Jefferson said. "Movies and television shows and depictions of certain things has influenced others to try to mimic it or mark it, and unfortunately it's to the demise of other people."
