Man dies in Westside truck fire

JSO: Man found dead outside truck with burns; no foul play suspected

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was found dead outside of a fiery truck early Thursday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Around 1:15 a.m. there was a 911 call made in reference to a fire at Pugh's Auto Sales, located at 5758 Lenox Ave.

"Jacksonville Fire and Rescue responded along with JSO. Upon their arrival they found a pickup truck fully engulfed in fire. They also found a male deceased who was found outside the pickup truck," said Sgt. Michael Paul, of JSO's Homicide Unit.

At this time JSO does not suspect foul play in this death.

The man had burns over most of his body, according to police.

"At first glance it seems like it he was inside the truck and it looks like the truck did catch on fire and it looks like he tried to exit the truck, escape the fire. It looks like he was not successful in that escape," said Paul.

Paul said investigators noticed there was an electrical chord that led from the business to the truck. JSO said it may have been an electrical fire, but it's just a guess.

The State Fire Marshal was called to the scene to investigate.

Police said the man was a family friend of the business owners.

Paul said surveillance video from Pugh's could be key to figuring out what caused the fire. JSO has contacted the owner of the business to get a hold of the surveillance tapes.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.
