Middle school guidance counselor sentenced on child porn charges

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A former Jacksonville middle school guidance counselor was sentenced by a federal judge Wednesday to 140 years in prison after he was convicted of producing, receiving and possessing child pornography.

According to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Robert Cowan, 50, was found guilty on Oct. 7, 2010, of using a 4-year-old child to produce sexually explicit images.

Cowan was arrested on Aug. 18, 2009, and Jacksonville police found hundreds of images and videos of child pornography on his home computer, his cellphone and his computer at Fort Caroline Middle School, where he worked as a guidance counselor.

Cowan had worked in public schools in Duval and Nassau counties since 1993.

Several of the images and videos showed children being raped and sexually abused.

U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan sentenced Cowan to the 140 years in prison and a life term of supervised release.
