Police find Northwest Jacksonville mother, 3 kids alive, but 'out of it'

Officers checking on welfare find 'unsual' family situation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Homicide detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office are investigating what they called a "very unusual" situation in Northwest Jacksonville Saturday night.

The Department of Children and Families said they called JSO to the Washington Heights Apartments several times last week to check on the well-being of a family.  Investigators said they never answered the door.

Saturday around 5:30 p.m., police found a window that was open and two officers crawled through it. They said they found a family curled up on the floor together asleep.

When officers woke up the family, they said they seemed very groggy and "out of it."

The family consists of a mother, two boys and a daughter, all between the ages of three and 10.

They were taken to the hospital and evaluated, and police say the they were beginning to act normal.

Investigators are trying to find out why the family was in that state in the first place.
