Flagler Beach pier reopens after Matthew

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – The city of Flagler Beach reopened its world-famous fishing pier to the public Saturday morning, nearly nine months after it was damaged in Hurricane Matthew.

The Flagler Beach Fishing Pier opened bright and early at 6 a.m. Its grand reopening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on July 1 at 9 a.m.

The pier received a considerable amount of damage during Hurricane Matthew and, as a result, had to close to the public for extensive repairs, the Flagler Beach Police Department said.

Over the past nine months, structural engineers have worked diligently on repairs to the pier.

While police said they look forward to people enjoying the pier again, they want them to remember the safety rules that coincide with activities on and around it.

"Our historic pier is a cornerstone of our beautiful city and we've all patiently waited for it to reopen," Flagler Beach Police Chief Matt Doughney said. "Those who enjoy fishing off the pier and those that enjoy surfing outside of the 150-foot limit can continue to coexist based on following established rules and mutual respect."
