Flagler County deputies stepping up DUI enforcement this holiday weekend

Deputies conducted 166 traffic stops between Friday, Saturday nights

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has stepped up its DUI enforcement this holiday weekend, both on the roads and on the water.

While Memorial Day weekend is in full swing, the Sheriff’s Office is reminding people to remember to choose a safe ride if they drink alcohol, and to never operate a vehicle if impaired.

Between Friday night and Saturday night, deputies conducted 166 traffic stops. They wrote 12 citations, issued 37 warnings and made three DUI arrests.

Just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash at Belle Terre Parkway and Rymfire Drive.

Police said the vehicle struck a traffic signal control box and completely uprooted it from the ground, causing $17,000 in damages. The driver, Michael Canty Jr., was arrested on suspicion of DUI, officials said. Canty took a one-way ride to jail in the FCSO’s new taxi-patrol car.

“So far, three people chose the wrong ride and took the one-way taxi to the Green Roof Inn this weekend. Don’t be like them,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Impaired driving is dangerous and a serious offense. Be responsible and plan a safe ride home. We don’t want to see anyone get injured or killed due to impaired driving.”
