Man hit, killed after jumping onto I-4 in Polk

POLK CITY, Fla. – A man was killed Monday morning after he jumped off an overpass onto Interstate 4 and was struck by a vehicle, officials said.

I-4 eastbound remains closed near Polk Parkway after the man, described by the Florida Highway Patrol only as a young adult, jumped off the State Road 559 overpass.

According to troopers, the man jumped off the overpass around 7 a.m. and struck by a pickup truck. The driver was not injured, the FHP said.

Traffic was detoured at the S.R. 559 exit ramp, which is near mile marker 44, then back onto eastbound I-4 entrance ramp, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers initially said two vehicles struck the man after he jumped.

No other details were immediately known.
