DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A mentally disabled man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting his adoptive father in central Florida.
A Volusia County judge sentenced 23-year-old Marcus White on Friday. The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that he was convicted in March of manslaughter.
Authorities say White fatality shot his sleeping father, Douglas White, in June 2011 in the family's camper near New Smyrna Beach. Prosecutors say Marcus White changed his story several times when questioned about why he was using his father's .40-caliber handgun, which he was not supposed to handle.
White's attorney argued for a lighter sentence, saying his client suffers from autism and fetal alcohol exposure, with the mental function of a young teen. The attorney said prison was not the place for White.
