Debate heats up on proposed RV park

YULEE, Fla. – Neighbors in Nassau County are clashing when it comes to two new communities. On one side is a growing subdivision; on the other is a proposed RV park that many don’t want to see built.

The site is on Semper Fi Drive in Yulee. The RV park would run parallel to I-95 and back right up to the Plummer’s Creek development.

Several of the people building in that subdivision say this isn’t what they had in mind when they decided to move there. They are so unhappy about this proposed RV park that they have started on online petition that’s gaining a lot of traction.

They’re concerned about more noise from the interstate, more traffic, and a drop in property
value. Tuesday night, they’ll let county leaders know about their frustration.

It's a familiar sight, and also a sign that a lot is going on- and going up in Yulee. That is especially the case at Plummer's Creek on State Road 200. That's what Sylvia Hockaday had in mind when she decided to build.

"It's beautiful out here. It's a nice neighborhood," said Hockaday. So, when she heard about the proposed RV park just around the corner on Semper Fi Drive, she wasn’t happy. She's not alone.

Right now, this online petition addresses Nassau County leaders directly. The message is clear and there are a number of listed concerns felt by neighbors.

Many of them worried that if built, the park would back up too close their properties.

"We like the neighborhood, but I'm just worried it's going to hurt our property values," said one woman who wanted to remain anonymous.  "When I looked at the plans, there's very little actual preserve buffer behind there. If they take away all those other trees, and clear all that other land, then we're just practically on the interstate."

Peter King is the planning director for Nassau County. King says he understands the concerns, but says the preserve is bigger than people realize. "It varies in width between 200 and 400 feet. That is filled with vegetation, so they would have a natural buffer in between them and the RV park," said King.

But some neighbors aren't convinced it's enough. They're ready to share their concerns with the county tonight.

The Board of County Commissioners will meet on Nassau Place in Yulee Tuesday night at 7 p.m. to discuss an amendment to the zoning plan for that property. The public is encouraged and welcome to attend.
News4Jax also reached out to the developer hoping to build the RV park for comment,  but so far, has not heard back.
