Volusia County deputies said the twin engine Cessna 337 had just taken off from the airport when it crashed. The tower manager at the airport called in the crash at 1:13 p.m., according to deputies.

The plane broke apart upon impact, killing the pilot, 56-year-old Paul Rooy, of Daytona Beach, deputies said. No one else was on board, and no one on the ground was injured.

Video from WKMG-TV's helicopter showed debris from the plane across a field and a tree snapped in half.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will be called in to investigate the cause of the crash.
