LAKELAND, Fla. - Police say a 3-year-old boy was locked outside of a Lakeland home while the couple taking care of him were inside.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office says neighbors called after hearing him cry. Police say the boy was outside the home Wednesday evening for more than an hour while his caretakers smoked marijuana and inhaled nitrous oxide.
The Ledger of Lakeland reports neighbors watched over the child until police arrived.
Police say upon arrival, the couple didn't open the door until about 15 minutes into deputies banging on the door. Police say when the door opened a cloud of smoke billowed outside. Police say the smoke smelled like marijuana.
According to a police report the couple say they left the boy unsupervised when they used drugs and then took a nap.
It's unclear who the child belongs to.
