MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Melbourne Police Department won't receive an armored assault vehicle because the department can't find an assault rifle.

Florida Today reports the rifle was given through a federal government program.  The rifle was noticed missing during an annual audit.  The department could not find the rifle even after searching the serial number in the federal database.

There were supposed to be 65 rifles and only 64 were accounted for.

The program had plans to give the department an armored truck, but canceled to give the department the vehicle because of the missing rifle.

City officials say they'll work to improve the inventory system.
