1 dead after motorcycle crash near St. Augustine

2 motorcycles hit truck backing up on US 1

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – Two motorcycles were involved in an accident with a truck Thursday night, leaving one rider dead, according to St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

Just before 9 p.m., a box truck backing into a private driveway off U.S. 1 near the Interstate 95 interchange was blocking a northbound lane when it was struck by two of three motorcycles traveling together, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Rider James Convertito, 49, of Shelton, Conn., was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers said he was not wearing a helmet.

The second rider, Leon Laquay, 51, of Seymour, Conn., was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The truck driver, Philip Smith, 29, of St. Augustine, was taken to Flagler Hospital with minor injuries.

According to the FHP report, charges are pending.
