911 calls released in Julington Creek park attack

Family offers reward for tips leading to arrest of attacker

JULINGTON CREEK, Fla. – Deputies have released 911 calls placed moments after a woman was brutally attacked at Julington Creek park, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said.

According to Sheriff's Office, a young man or possibly a teenager hit a 39-year-old woman over the head about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday as she was leaving the bathroom at Julington Creek Plantation Park, just off Race Track Road.

The woman, who was on the phone with a friend when she was hit, fell to the ground, and the attacker hit her several more times until she called for help and he ran off, deputies said.

Emergency dispatched received two 911 calls, including one from the friend who was on the phone with the woman at the time of the attack.

911 Dispatcher: "Who attacked her?"
Caller 1: "She doesn't know, just some random person ... She came out and he just beat on her. She said her head's bleeding everywhere."

The 911 calls reveal a very chaotic situation as a dispatcher talks the friend and witness through ways to apply pressure to the woman until officials arrived. Unfortunately, neither saw the attacker's face.

Caller 1: "I just walked up here. She's pouring blood everywhere out of her head ... He hit her with something in the head and ran."

Within minutes, a nearby witness also called 911.

Caller 2: "Just like five minutes ago, I was walking my dog. I hear her screaming. I looked over. He ran into my neighborhood."
Caller 2: "I had her sit down. She's bleeding from the head."
911 Dispatcher: "Did he do anything else to her? Does she have any injuries?"
Caller 2: "No. She was screaming."

According to both callers, the area where the woman was attacked was poorly lit. Since then, a light has been placed in the area.

The woman suffered a cut to the right side of her head and needed more than 40 stitches at Baptist South Hospital, her uncle said.

As of Friday, the woman was still in shock and recovering, her sister told News4Jax. Her family is now offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the attacker. To send a tip, email rewardinfo@usa.com.

Deputies used a K-9 officer to try to track the woman's attacker, described as a high-school-aged white male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, but had no luck. Deputies said several sporting events with hundreds of people in attendance were happening in the surrounding fields, but no one at those events saw the attack.

The Sheriff's Office asked that anyone at the park between 8-9 p.m. Tuesday and shot video or took photos take a look back at the footage and see if there is anything suspicious in the background. If so, please call the Sheriff's Office at 904-824-8304.
