ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A temporary no-wake zone is in effect in a St. Johns County neighborhood to protect property that was already damaged from Hurricane Matthew, deputies announced Tuesday.

Boaters passing the Summer Island neighborhood along the Intracoastal Waterway are unknowingly creating additional washout and structural damage when they pass and create a wake, according the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit is asking anyone heading out in the area via boat to treat it as a no-wake zone until the damage is repaired.

The temporary no-wake zone runs in the Intracoastal from Green Channel Markers 83A to 85.

Temporary no-wake zones were also established along the St. Johns River in Volusia County to prevent flooding after Matthew caused high water levels.
