Pickup hits bicyclist on A1A

56-year-old rider transported to Shands with critical injuries

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A pickup truck hit a man riding a bicycle on A1A in Ponte Vedra Beach Friday morning, sending the rider to the hospital with critical injuries.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Michael Nguyen, 56, was riding a beach cruiser south along A1A about 8:20 a.m. when a Ford F-150 driven by Marc Bailey, 43, attempted to make a left turn onto A1A from the intersection at Dolphin Boulevard.  Nguyen attempted to swerve to avoid a collision, but hit the pickup.

Nguyen was transported by helicopter to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with what troopers said were critical injuries.

Bailey stopped after the incident and was questioned by Florida Highway Patrol.

Southbound traffic on A1A was backed up for some time as troopers investigated the accident.

When the FHP report was released Friday afternoon, the incident was still under investigation.
