Teacher resigns after gun was found in backpack

Grady Heiss escorted off St. Joseph Academy campus

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A teacher at St. Joseph Academy in St. Augustine resigned one day after he was escorted off campus for having a gun in a backpack, according to the Diocese of St. Augustine.

Grady Heiss taught science at the Catholic private school located off SR-207 near US-1.

Police received a tip on Wednesday that Heiss had a gun in a backpack and they went to campus to investigate.

They discovered the gun and escorted him off campus.

He was placed on administrative leave, but has since resigned.

The Diocese said no children were in danger and Heiss did not have any intentions to use the gun on campus.
