Uprooted trees cause damage during storm

Trees land on mobile home, car in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Severe weather that swept through St. Johns County on Wednesday afternoon left a wake of power outages and trees blown down on streets, cars and houses.

The wind was so severe in St. Augustine that it uprooted an oak tree and dropped it on top of a mobile home.

The people inside when it happened all managed to get out OK.

Anthony Somy, who lives inside the home with his brother, said if he'd been in his bedroom at the time, he wouldn’t be alive.

“It started raining real hard, started blowing real bad, and then I went in the room,” Somy said. “When I went in my bedroom in the back, and I came out, and I was just past 5 feet from my bedroom maybe, 5 to 6 feet and bang -- the tree came down.”

The National Weather Service said there was a significant weather advisory in effect at that time, due to a thunderstorm with strong winds.

It’s possible there was a microburst associated with that storm.

Somy's wasn't the only home affected by the severe weather.

Just a few streets over, a huge tree fell on top of a woman’s car.

She was inside her home when it happened and was grateful the tree didn’t hit her house.

“It was just raining and then it started storming out of nowhere, and we heard this loud crash and looked out and we thought it hit the roof at first. And I'm like, 'Oh man, where's my car?' because I can't see it behind the huge tree that is on top of it,” Elise Brodrique said.

Somy said the Red Cross is helping he and his brother, and the owner of the home has found another place for them to live.
