ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The St. Augustine community is still reeling Saturday from the devastation by Hurricane Matthew as clean-up and relief efforts continue. County and city agencies are working together to get supplies out to families in need, as well as information on insurance.
A recovery center, set up by the emergency operations center, has been working with the American Red Cross, volunteers and other agencies to give out supplies.
St. Augustine Mayor Nancy Shaver said the recovery center is offering basic supplies such as food and medicine, and services to help people with their homes.
Officials said the city of St. Augustine and St. Johns County are trying to secure federal assistance to get people into temporary housing, as many families can’t live in their homes due to water damage and water quality issues.
The recovery center’s goal is to bring as much stability to the community as possible through the weeks ahead as cleanup continues.
“We know we had about 300 homes affected here and saying it in that sense doesn’t do it justice,” Shaver said. “I’m sure you have seen it, it’s a real family fabric that has been torn apart and we are going to put it back together.”
