ST AUGUSTINE - The joy of surfing is something that anyone who can swim can experience regardless of their age. For dozens of teenagers out of school for summer, they are learning the basics from the pros.
"It was really hard to stand up at first but after a few days I started getting the hang of it" said Kenyon Barr who is a 7 year old surf camp attendee.
Barr says she is 'stoked' to surf.
"Stoked means really happy, and narly means whoa that's a narly wave that's really crazy looking" says surfing instructor Dustin Estes.
Surf lingo isn't the only thing the St. Augustine Surfing school is teaching kids out on summer break. The teenagers are also learn about ocean safety and then how to master the wave.
"Believe it or not we've had kids get barreled on the first week, it does happen but its very rare but at the end of the day it's to have fun and that's what these kids are doing is have fun" said Estes.
Estes say his team of professional CPR certified surf coaches help kids get in touch with ocean. He says more than 95 percent of his campers learn what hanging ten is all about.
"Sometimes the waves are fast, sometimes they are slow and sometimes there aren't any good waves but today is really big" said Barr.
Most surfers say they thought surfing would be easy at first, but the teenagers are quickly learning surfing requires more balance and agility that they first expected.
But with the right teacher teaching these kids all the right moves, instructors say it's only a matter of time until the teens are hanging ten.
Parents say it's a great experience
"We live in the perfect place for surfing, why live here and not learn how to surf" said Tasha Staunton who has 9 year old in the camp.
The St. Augustine Surf School is open for teenagers agest 6-14 and the cost for the week is $180.
