Vilano Beach sand replacement project moves forward

SJC unable to get easement from 1 of 154 beachfront property owners

VILANO BEACH, Fla. – An emergency sand replacement project in Vilano Beach will move forward despite officials being unable to get an easement from one of 154 property owners, according to the St. Johns County Public Works Department.

The county needed signatures by 5 p.m. Monday from 154 beachfront property owners to approve:

  • And placing sand on their property.

As of Monday's 5 p.m. deadline, the county had 153 signatures -- falling short by one.

Earlier Monday, there had been two other property owners who hadn't signed. But county officials told News4Jax that the two verbally agreed over the phone just a couple hours before the deadline.

According to the St. Johns County Public Works Department, the property owner who didn’t sign flat out refused.

The assistant director of the county's Public Works Department told News4Jax Tuesday night that the project will still be able to move forward by working around the property without an easement.

Now that the project can move forward, the 2-mile stretch of Vilano Beach will get about 70,000 cubic yards of sand, which is equivalent to about 14 million gallons.

The project is scheduled to begin this month, and crews are expected to begin laying pipes on March 27.

The work will be finished in June, officials said.Â
