Food distribution to be held Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – On Saturday, September 13, Nourishment Network and its nonprofit partner Farm Share will bring approximately 60,000 pounds of free, nutritious food directly into a Northside Jacksonville community that is identified as among Florida's worst food deserts by a new online GIS hunger-mapping tool launched by the Florida Department of Agriculture.

The agency expects 1,000 families to attend the distribution, marking it as one of the largest distributions in its three-month mass distribution series that launched in July.

The agency will provide families with USDA meats, fresh produce and dairy products provided by Farm Share as well as a variety of rescued food items from Publix.

Nourishment Network Executive Director Frank Ormonde said the organization's recent partnership with Farm Share has been instrumental in bringing new, added-value resources to the community, with an additional 11 million pounds of fresh produce expected to be distributed to North Florida families within the next year.

"Although we've already passed the midpoint of our mass distribution series, there are still many more hungry families throughout Northeast Florida who are counting on Nourishment Network and Farm Share to help put dinner on their tables and provide essential nutrition for their children," Ormonde said.

The food distribution goes from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Gateway Town Center mall.
The nonprofit projects an estimated 4.5 million pounds of free food will have been delivered to 18,000 food-insecure families in North Florida by the end of this month.
